Beach Please!

One Crazy Movie with Demi Moore

Sponsored by

My creative process for this newsletter is usually to start with content that inspires me to shop. But this time I reversed it. I knew I wanted to do a beach theme and figured it would not be hard to find a current stylish beach movie or series. But I was stumped. Nothing was clicking. ( I already dedicated a RoundUp to “Palm Royale (sans Finale). So I decided to go back to one of my favorite summer movies from the 80’s, “One Crazy Summer.”

ONE CRAZY MOVIE WITH DEMI MOORE

The year was 1986. The Police had disbanded, NKOTB had formed. Cary Grant died and Lady Gaga was born. “Top Gun” blew up at the box office only to be out done by the Chernobyl explosion. And a young John Cusack, not bad boy enough to be part of the Bratt Pack and a couple years before he would seal himself in pop culture history as Lloyd Dobler, dramatically holding up a boom box in the rain playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” to a sheltered but brilliant Ione Skye. That scene, along with the final Jake birthday cake scene in “Sixteen Candles,” I think we can hold FULLY responsible for an entire generation of romantics expecting way too much effort from their crushes.

Gen Z readers these moments I speak of are the the equivalent to texting a girl multiple emoji hearts.

But back to “One Crazy Summer.” So John Cusack’s character “Hoops McCann” is on a vacation with his friends’ family in Nantucket and although he could have the pick of the Lily Pulitzer Litter, he falls for distressed, bohemian, synth rocker, Cassandra (Demi Moore). Add in Bobcat Goldthwait who btw is not dead! He’s only 63 and seems to be healthy and thriving with a robust IG account, Jeremy Piven and Billie Bird and you’ve got yourself one heck of summer 80’s RomCom.

A couple years later a similar film would emerge called “Satisfaction” with Justine Bateman and her band (which includes Julia Roberts???) on a mission to impress club owner Liam Neeson. Well needless to say sparks fly and Liam quickly finds himself TAKEN with Justine. Thanks guys I’ll be here all week!

Here are the two 80’s movies performance scenes back to back. Please let me know your favorite and why!

I might have to go with “more cow bell” on that one. But anyway “One Crazy Summer” is my content pick this week and although there’s really no style anyone should be emulating from that movie, there were a lot of great beach scenes with families and kids so that’s what the RoundUp is inspired by today!

THOSE SU-UH-MER FRIIIIII-DAYS!!

I have been searching for the perfect tinted moisturizer since the pre Lewinsky Clinton Administration. And it’s honestly a tall order. They need go on silky smooth but not too greasy, have some sort of tint (but not too much!!!) and completely camouflage however jacked up your face looks at 8am, but feel weightless. And thanks to one of my high school besties, we’ll call her,“Tori,” who was obsessed with this tint by Summer Fridays, I gave it a try. I bought it in shade “4” and have to say it’s a WINNER!!!

I searched around and it seems to be $42 on most sites. But if you go to the Summer Friday’s website and you’re a new customer you can sign up for 10% off.

SAND FREE ZONE

Ah, who doesn’t enjoy a day at the beach? ME! That’s who. So when I saw this gorgeous blanket/tarp from Sunlit I thought if anything is going to keep the sand out of the tuna, it’s this bad boy right here.

Made in striking designs that makes it easy to find your crew on the beach, the Sunlit sand proof beach blanket/mat with corner weighted sand pockets and carrying tote is perfect for making a bold sand free statement on the beach.

UP YOUR CASTLE GAME

If this Create A Castle Sandcastle Kit existed when my kids were little it would have been a game changer! WTF!!! It was like for 100 years these kits had the pail, shovel and watering can and then BOOM! Someone goes on
“Shark Tank,” recognizes parents pain at the beach and solves it!

CATCH AND NEVER RELEASE

Another great way to keep the kids occupied for a solid 15-20 minutes* is Toss and Catch. This is one of my “go to” little kid birthday gifts. Catching the ball with velcro reduces the time chasing the ball and builds kids confidence at the same time. *Warning if ball or mitt get TOO sandy they stop working.

Beach Picnics, sand castles, velcro balls - this newsletter is exhausting me! When my finances improve I will promise I will update this post with a hotel on the beach with cabana service and a “Kids Club.”

But in the meantime it’s…

PALOMA TIME!

I just realized that my newsletter tagline is “where content and commerce meet for cocktails”- but there have been no cocktails!

Well that’s changing right now my friends!

I was unfortunately sucked into Jury Duty last week but luckily it was at the Long Island City courthouse in Queens which is a relatively painless experience. But after a grueling day of avoiding eye contact with the lawyers, I stumbled upon this cute Italian restaurant, Levante, and had the most delicious paloma/meets margarita/meets Marta! I have not had a chance to recreate this at home yet but here’s what’s in it.

  • Tequila Blanco

  • White Grapefruit Juice

  • Curacao (I asked for very little in mine so it wasn’t too sweet)

  • Bergamot

  • Shaken and served over crushed ice in a double old fashioned glass.
